what to say when disrespected

use these in your next conversation

What do you say when someone talks down to you?

If you have someone in your life whose presence puts you on edge, who makes you feel nervous, or less than, who raises their voice at you, makes demands, or demeans you.

I’ve been in a situation where someone is treating me quite disrespectfully, so I lean on these teachings from Jefferson Fisher:

Here’s what to say to a bully:

#1: Slowly ask, “Are you okay?”
It signals their behavior isn’t acceptable and denies them the reaction they want.

#2: Ask questions of intent, like, “Did you mean to embarrass me?”
It forces them to face the impact of their words.

#3: Say, “Attention or insecurity?”
When they ask what you mean, respond, “Did you say that for attention or insecurity?” These will make them think twice before coming at you again.

Never feel ashamed for looking for help with what to say. There are many wise people out there, and in the heat of the moment, anyone can lose their cool. Even experts need help.

Thanks for listening,
O
