what to say to jews part 1

the jewish new year is today

Dearest readers,

Today is Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year, a traditional day of celebration as the Jewish people enter into their year 5786.

I spent the evening and slept overnight in the local synagogue, staying up late discussing Judaism with the Rabbi (while overeating again, now I wake up with a tummy ache).

“L’shana tova” or “Shana tova” is a simple greeting that means happy new year, but it is no trivial pleasantry. Telling your Jewish friends or neighbors this phrase is a a declaration that we see one another.

You’re saying: I honor your story. I stand with your hope.

On Wrestling with the World’s Troubles

We can’t ignore the moral labyrinth in Israel and Palestine war. It is easier, from America’s shores, to watch the horror and to offer support online, liking or commenting on the outspoken many whose views align with yours. Jews around the world suffer breaking hearts every day over this conflict. Those for peace through negotiation and those for peace through overwhelming power, both dissatisfied by the current state of the war.

When you wish a Jew “shana tova,” consider offering a word of empathy, because empathy is not weakness. To hold another’s pain without surrendering your principles is the practice of a free and virtuous citizen.

The Charlie Kirk Vigil as a Mirror

In recent days, the vigil for Charlie Kirk gathered mourners across America, and it seems there is palpable tension for what happens next. Some promise retaliatory violence, others (like his wife, Erica) offer forgiveness. Because whether or not you agree with Charlie’s politics, he stood for debate, active listening, and conversation.

In this new year, we must defend the right for safe discourse.

Because our country is in danger when citizens stop seeing one another.
Because a small greeting can be a mighty signal.
Because listening is an act of courage.

Let us, in this New Year, renew our commitment to seeing each other as humans.

With respect, resolve, and a listening ear,
Orly

P.S. We were able to raise $200 dollars for Lucas before I even posted a video about his story on instagram. Let’s see if we can make it higher!

Shana tova!
