Rock, paper, scissors, laser beam
You get three choices in the game of Rock, Paper, Scissors.
Scissors beats paper.
Paper beats rock.
Rock beats scissors.
And then someone introduced the laser beam, which didn’t have a rival until someone introduced Spock, the Star Trek character.
I never understood why Spock beat laser beams, nor why he lost to scissors, nor do I lose sleep over it.
Our conversation patterns will remain the same if we fail to introduce newness.
While one technique may invite the chaos of laser beams,
another will invite the calmness of Spock.
And suddenly, the game becomes more interesting.
There are so many more moves to play, readily available to play, hiding right outside our perception of the rules.
