lessons from a speaking workshop

Yesterday, I taught a professional speaking workshop.

I brought in a friend of mine, Timmy Bishop, who has been speaking at schools around the country for a few years now. We shared our collective experience with the students who attended.

Neither of us knew what we were doing at the beginning.
We started with something true and took a risk to speak about it. Each speech we gave, we improved our messaging, and our confidence built.

A 1/10 for you may be a 10/10 for someone else.
You’re your own biggest critic. In my first big 45 minute speech, students were given feedback forms from the organization. I thought I did terribly. Most students scored me a 9/10 or 10/10.

Reps are the most important thing.
Picking a day for your first speech gets you rolling. If you want to start talking, pick a date to talk. Then do it no matter what. It doesn’t get easier, but the barrier is broken.

Timmy said he wanted to be a speaker for 7 years before he got on stage.
Don’t wait.

If you want help getting your first speaking engagement, reply to this message and we’ll see what we can do.

Raise your voice, save the world.
