Motivation Monday: Build Social Capital

10/10/forever - A billionaire's rule on friendship

An hour in conversation a day.

That seems to be the social prescription that I keep seeing.
A benchmark I often hit since I spend a lot of time in the car and nearly all of it on the phone.

I read a newsletter the other day of a man who grew two billion dollar companies.

He has the 10/10/forever rule for friendships.

Have 10 friends.
Give them 10 years.
Be friends with them forever.

He says that you don’t need a lot of friends, but you need the right friends.

For those 10 friends, do anything for them.
Preempt their needs, celebrate their victories, pay for experiences, spare no expense.

For everyone else, be kind, but don’t open your circle to anyone but the best.

I respect it.

Social scientists keep pointing to studies that show that most American men have fewer than 5 friends.

But do most American men have a problem with that?
How many friends does one need?

Personally, that’s too few for more. But when it comes to close friends, it’s harder to say.

How many good friends do you have?

Wether it feels like enough or not enough, look forward to spending an hour in conversation today.
