The Dark night of the soul is a concept written about by many poets, authors, motivators, survivors, and those storytellers who triumph over the despondent hours, weeks, or months they consider their dark night of the soul.

I’ve been told it’s easier to write about scars than open wounds.
But if there’s one thing I’ve learned about the connection of humans, it’s that sharing the vulnerable things allows the light to shine in.

Since sending out my email about my struggle last week, I’ve been fortunate to receive love:

A text about being prayed for from Ben, who I told about this dark night.
I didn’t reply.
Days later, another text. Again, I didn’t reply.
Too bright? Maybe.
Days later, a third text.
I replied.

A daily morning call from Allen.
I thanked him today (as I do every day) as I drove to the pool to swim at 6:45am.
I said, “I would still be in bed if you didn’t call.”
Whether that’s true or not, we’ll never know.
He called. I got up. It took eight minutes.

If you know someone is struggling,
give them a call.

You voice may be the warm hand they need.
Just to get in motion.

And once they’re in motion, inertia will carry them a bit further.
