Listening hack for ADHD PPL
An ADHD-lifestyle content creator a million followers asked me how to a better listener.
Says he struggles with interrupting and also with zoning out.
“Then say that you have ADHD and struggle with interrupting and zoning out.”
“You can say that?”
“Yes.”
“Isn’t that rude?”
“Not if you say it from a place of caring and consideration.”
“But isn’t listening just being quiet?”
“Nay!”
Listening isn’t just being quiet. Listening is fitting your puzzle piece to their puzzle piece. Listening is dancing. It’s sometimes leading, sometimes following, always flowing.
Some tips for ADHDers for before a conversation:
Lead with “I care about you this conversation and I have to say…”
Say how long you might have, even if it’s just five minutes.
Say if you’re feeling distracted, distractible, or not present.
Say if you struggle with interrupting, then the speaker has permission to bring you back to center.
You may find this awkward. You may find this self-serving. It is.
You’re giving others a guide how to fit your puzzle pieces together.
If yours feels a little jagged today, surprise yourself by discovering how willing people are to be flexible once you show them what your capacity looks like.
