How To Have a Better Christmas Next Year

Christmas, the most celebrated holiday in the U.S.A., is also one of the busiest days for the suicide and mental health support lines.

Because while some people gather with their loved ones, others aren’t so fortunate.

I think about the calls I took as a volunteer for the hotline around this time years ago, and they still stick with me.

It isn’t only the lonely who call, regretting their decisions to rebuild bridges with their families and friends. The story I heard the most — the spouse, either male or female, who gave their all to their partner and let the other relationships fade away. Those who decided to neglect their garden of friends and family. Suddenly, illness or divorce takes away their one person, and they find themselves alone.

This, or that same story without the spouse.

A reminder that this is the perfect time to send a holiday greeting to a friend, or a family member.

It’s not too late.

And new years is another excuse to reconnect.

Build bridges.

They’ll support.
