Gratitude vs Generosity
Keeping a journal has been one of my most important practices for as long as I can remember, and my box of journals was the first item I put in my car during my evacuation from the fire.
I’ve tried many prompts and styles, and combined them into a template page I use just about every day which contains sections for my habits (food/water, sleep, exercise, connection, gratitude) and then my reflections.
I mention gratitude because esteemed researched Andrew Huberman, along with many others, surmised that a gratitude practice is a key to unlocking more peace and happiness in coping with stressful times and amplifying good times.
My practice has been simple enough: Write two lines about what I am grateful for. It’s usually a list of people.
I recently heard an opinion on deepening the practice to include a dangerous new element → generosity.
In addition to considering what I’ve received in the day (which has been a lot given I’m living in donated homes and wearing donated clothes) now I must get to consider what I’m doing for others on a daily basis.
It’s not always easy to be grateful. Even harder to be generous.
Here are some easy actions to consider:
Call a friend/family member to connect or see how they’re doing
Ask how you can help
Text a compliment to someone you care about
Give feedback to someone who could use it
Want to do something right now? Start your day with a generous action.
