Choosing Beggars
Yesterday, was a scorching day, and I was having breakfast with a friend when a homeless man interrupted our conversation with a plea, “I need help. Can you please buy me a soda and an energy drink?”
I dart inside the healthy food store and bought him a Yerba Mate and a probiotic soda. When I offered them to him, he refused.
“I don’t drink that healthy shit. I wanted a Monster Energy.”
Awkward.
If your reaction to this story is to judge Justin (the homeless man) as a choosing beggar who is out of line, consider this: Was I truly listening?
If I had led with genuine patience or curiosity, I could have asked what he wanted, but I was more focused on what I wanted — him to leave.
