Boring Questions: When to fight for fun

In partnership with

Yesterday was my first day in a school I’ll be studying in for three weeks. The admin team put my name on the wall. People came up to me, introducing themselves and asking me about who I was.

Forty “Where are you from” and “What do you do”s later, I’d grown tired of giving the same answer and following story, so I flipped the question.

Most people were caught off guard when I said, “Los Angeles. Now, what’s your biggest fear?” but it led to better conversations. More engagement from me.

Until the evening, one student didn’t respond well to my reverse question.

Los Angeles. What about you? And what’s your biggest fear?”
“I don’t want to answer that.”
“Is it private?”
“No, it’s just not the time or place for that.”
“Okay. Then what is your dream?”
“It’s not time for that either.”

He was annoyed by the questions.
I mentioned that I was tired of answering the same question over and over.
He said that it’s a good question to ask.

He wasn’t wrong.
I was.

It was a good question to ask someone.
It’s a basic one.
But a fine one if you want to connect with someone on the surface level.

Next time, I’ll make an index card or QR code has my basic answers on them.
Save us both the trouble.

Connect away,
O
