Blaming the children

mental health is a fascinating crisis

“Kids are the only people in the world you’re allowed to hit. Do you realize that? They’re the most vulnerable and they’re the most destroyed by being hit. But it’s totally okay to hit them.

And they’re the only ones!

If you hit a dog, they’ll put you in jail for that shit.

You can’t hit a person unless you can prove they were trying to kill you.

But a little tiny person with a head this big who trusts you implicitly… Fuck em.”

Because of my work in mental health and communication, I’ve been invited to work with teens struggling with mental health challenges. Often, they tell me stories they don’t tell anyone else. Not the other kids. Not the therapists. Just me.

Why? Sometimes, I’m a good listener.

This is my gripe:

Many of these kids are suffering because of the adults in their lives.

They live in fear to go back home.

They blame themselves for the issues they’ve been forced to develop.

I could tell them it’s not their fault (and I do sometimes) but it doesn’t make anything better.

I would like to create a world where people do better.

But how?

Many kids spend 3 months in mental facilities, hate it there, resist much of the work, and go back to the families that struggled them in the first place.

I wonder if we can create a resident in-patient treatment facility for parents.

Not jail. But treatment.

Food for thought.
